A New Approach for Solving the Time-Cost Trade-Off Problem When Crashing the Projects in a Fuzzy Environment
Abstract
Completing a project earlier than its normal duration incurs extra cost because some activities should be crashed. To minimize this extra cost, the optimization models can be used to obtain the optimal value that each activity should be crashed. These models are formed based on different parameters, including the normal and crash durations and their corresponding costs needed to complete each activity. The exact values of these parameters cannot be usually determined due to the uncertainty nature of the project activities. Therefore, fuzzy optimization models have been developed to solve the uncertain project compression models. These models usually ignore the uncertainty nature of the project parameters by converting them into crisp values at the first step and then designing the crisp models. To overcome this ignorance, this study presents a new approach for solving the fuzzy project compression models. This approach not only preserve the fuzzy nature of parameters, but also obtains the optimal values of decision variables as fuzzy values, and converts them into crisp values at the last step. As a result, the proposed approach preserves the fuzzy nature of the project compression models better than the existing models.
